Patient Education

What are the signs and symptoms of periodontal infection?

Because periodontal infection grows under your gums, you may have no symptoms at all. Patients with more advanced periodontal disease may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums that may or may not bleed spontaneously or with tooth brushing
  • Tooth sensitivity to heat/cold
    Bad breath
  • Deep pockets around the teeth
  • Spaces between the teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Gums receding around the teeth (longer looking teeth)

What Are The Stages Of Periodontal Disease?

Stage 1: Gingivitis: In this early stage, your gums may look normal, but they also may be red, puffy, and easily bleed when you brush your teeth. You also may notice some mouth odor. This is because bacteria in plaque have caused infection.

Stage 2: Early Periodontitis: This occurs when the bacterial infection spreads from the gum to the bone that supports the teeth. The bacteria then cause small spaces or crevices to form between the gums. These crevices are called pockets. They are deeper than normal spaces, which measure 1 to 3 mm deep. Bacteria in the pocket also can destroy bone. As the pocket grows and the amount of bacteria increases, the gums receed down the root of the tooth, further increasing the pocket depth.

Stage 3: Moderate Periodontitis: When the gum has crept further down the root, it is called moderate periodontitis. In this stage, up to one-third of your bone has been lost.

Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis: When half or more of the original bone holding the tooth has been lost, and pockets are very deep, it is called advanced periodontitis. The tooth may appear longer because the root is exposed, and the tooth may loosen and eventually fall out, or have to be removed by your dentist.

How Is Periodontal Infection Treated?

Periodontal disease is an infection in the gums and jawbone. The goal of treatment is to remove this infection and prevent it from coming back. The specific treatment required to do this will vary with each patients’ individual needs. After your initial examination, we will completely explain your different options for treatment.

FAQ's

”What is going to happen at my first visit?”
On your first visit to our office, you will receive a periodontal examination. You should experience little, if any, discomfort during this examination. X-rays will be requested from your referring dentist. If necessary, x-rays will be taken to evaluate any loss of bone around teeth.

Afterward, our findings and your options for treatment will be thoroughly explained. At that time, the doctor will answer any questions you may have. Our goal is that you leave with a complete understanding of your condition and the treatment needed to restore you to optimum oral health.

“How much will treatment cost and will my insurance cover it?”
While periodontal treatment is not as costly as replacing natural teeth due to tooth loss, its cost can vary greatly depending upon your needs. If you have dental insurance, this may provide full or partial coverage. Our office will contact your insurance company to learn what they will cover. As a courtesy to our patients, we will gladly work with your dental benefits provider to maximize your insurance coverage. We feel that finances should never be an obstacle to treatment. For your convenience, we offer several payment options to best suit your individual needs. Our office manager will be happy to answer any of your financial or insurance questions.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and CareCredit.

What other treatments do you provide?

Besides periodontal treatment and dental implants, we can perform many procedures.

To request an appointment with any of our doctors, please contact either our Upland, CA office at 909-949-2881 or our San Bernardino, CA office at 909-383-0625.
