Meet Our Periodontists
Dr. Daniel Kunihira
Dr. Daniel Kunihira has practiced periodontics in the Inland Empire since 1982. After finishing his residency training in periodontics at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University (1982), he taught as a full-time faculty member at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He currently teaches on a part-time basis and was recently recognized for 35 years of service to dental education.
Dr. Kunihira was born in St. Helena, California and raised in the Bay area, South of San Francisco. After completion of undergraduate college education at La Sierra University in 1970, he entered Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry and graduated with a D.D.S. degree in 1974. At his graduation, he was awarded the Loma Linda University Periodontology Award, the American Academy of Periodontology Award, and inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national honor society in dentistry.
Dr. Kunihira volunteered for overseas mission work in Okinawa, Japan for a 4 year period. This was followed by his periodontal residency and return to Loma Linda University.
Dr. Kunihira has the unique privilege of having both his children pursuing careers in the dental field. Angie, his daughter is a dental hygienist. Mark Kunihira joined the group as a periodontist in 2008. Dr. Kunihira and his wife, Linda enjoy pursuing an active life-style with snow skiing and snow shoeing in the winter as well as off-roading on quads, mountain biking, hiking and canoeing during the summer months. He also has a great passion for photography.
Dr. Mark Jeffrey Kunihira
Dr. Mark Kunihira graduated with a DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 2004. After practicing for a year as a general dentist in Lake Arrowhead, he decided to further his studies in dentistry and completed his residency in Periodontics at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in June, 2008. He joined his father's practice in Upland and San Bernardino during the summer of 2008. He has been trained in all aspects of periodontal therapy including bone regeneration, implants and periodontal plastic surgery. When he is not practicing dentistry, Dr. Mark enjoys fishing, gold-panning, snowboarding, snowshoeing, camping, water sports and hiking.
Dr. Daniel Newbold
Dr. Daniel Newbold graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1982 with honors in Periodontics and Endodontics. For the next 8 years, Dr. Newbold worked for the US Indian Health Service. He received the Outstanding Public Health Service Award and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1990, Dr. Newbold returned to Loma Linda University where he completed his residency in Periodontics with honors.
Dr. Newbold joined the Inland Perio Practice in 1992 and became a partner in 1995. While teaching part time at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Dr. Newbold was able to teach two of his son-in-laws and one of his daughters! Dr. Newbold and his wife, Melodee, have 3 daughters (one dentist and two physicians) and are currently enjoying their first grandchild. They all pursue a very active lifestyle in sports of all kinds with surfing, snow skiing, mountain biking and beach volleyball at the top. Golf was recently added to the list thanks to his newly acquired son-in-laws although Dr. Newbold prefers riding his motorcycle in the hills. Dr. Newbold also assists his wife in a major on-going cancer research project.
